Three Days Fly Fishing for Marble Trout in Trentino with Yvon Chouinard

Wild rivers, authentic values, and unforgettable moments in the Dolomites

Some experiences go far beyond fly fishing.

Spending three days fly fishing in Trentino with Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia, in search of marble trout (Salmo marmoratus), was one of those rare moments where nature, friendship, and shared values come together.

Fly Fishing Wild Alpine Rivers in the Dolomites

It was incredible to see how naturally Yvon feels at home in wild rivers. His movements on the water reflect a lifetime spent outdoors: calm, respectful, and deeply connected to the environment.

Fishing for marble trout in Trentino requires a technical and thoughtful approach: reading currents, choosing the right flies, and adapting constantly to alpine conditions. But there was never any rush. The river set the pace, as it should.

Three Intense Days of Marble Trout, Laughter, and Emotions

These were three days full of fish, but even more full of real emotions.

Great catches mixed with genuine laughter, friendly conversations, and those quiet moments standing mid-river, simply watching the water flow.

This is fly fishing at its purest, not measured by numbers, but by memories.

Mountain Huts, Local Food, and Trentino Traditions

Of course, no alpine fly fishing experience in the Dolomites would be complete without stopping at traditional mountain huts.

We enjoyed typical Trentino cuisine, local products, and simple dishes that perfectly reflect the soul of these mountains.

Sharing a meal after a day on the river is part of the experience, a way to truly live the territory, not just fish it.

The Man Behind Patagonia

What impressed me most was how Yvon truly embodies the philosophy of Patagonia.

He is an authentic person, deeply committed to protecting our planet and genuinely motivated to make a positive impact. There is no separation between the man and the brand, his values are real, lived every day, and reflected in his actions.

Spending time together on the river made this crystal clear.

Why I Chose to Be a Fly Fishing Guide

Guiding Yvon on my home waters reminded me why I chose this path.

Fly fishing in the Dolomites is not just about technique or results. It’s about connection, respect, and responsibility toward fragile alpine ecosystems.

The rivers of Trentino and their marble trout still have many stories to tell, if we are willing to listen.

See you on the river,
